The Women’s Premier League (WPL) is expected to kick-off in March 2022 and run until May 2023. The league is Tanzania’s first women’s domestic football competition and is sponsored by Serengeti Lite and organised by the Tanzania Football Association (TFF).
The league will consist of 16 teams and will be divided into two groups of eight: the Central zone and the North zone. The teams from each zone will be competing for promotion to the top division.
The league will begin with a round-robin format in March 2022 and end with the Grand Final in May 2023. The team with the highest points at the end of the regular season will be crowned champions. In addition, the bottom two teams from each group will be relegated to the second division.
The league also has an extensive network of grassroots football, which includes partner clubs, development leagues, regional playing tours, and regional tournaments. This greatly enhances the development of the women’s game in the country.
The league will also be the first to feature women’s footballers from different underprivileged backgrounds, including the foundation of the Serengeti Lifestyle Football Academy. Thanks to this, some of the region’s most talented female footballers will be given the opportunity to pursue their dreams.
By encouraging more girls and women to participate in football and other sports, the league aims to help reduce gender inequality, bring about societal change, and enable female athletes to reach their potential.
